How much does it cost to become a Clear member?

Clear is available for $100 plus a $28 TSA vetting fee, for a total of $128 per year. Lock in these prices by purchasing a two-year membership for $256 or a three-year membership for $384. Your Clear card will work at any US airport with a registered traveler program at no additional cost and with no cap on usage of the lanes.

How do I join Clear?

The Clear application is a two step process:

Step One: Sign-up online at www.flyclear.com.

Step Two: Stop by a Clear enrollment station to have images of your iris and fingerprints captured, and to submit two forms of approved government-issued identification for verification. Please bring a US Passport if you have one. Please read the document requirements before you come to complete to the Clear enrollment station.

Then, your application is sent to the U.S. Government's Transportation Security Administration (TSA). TSA assesses each applicant for membership to Clear. Once you are approved, you will be notified by email and receive your Clear card in the mail.

What forms of identification do I need for enrollment?

In order to complete in-person enrollment, each applicant must have one of the combinations provided of two approved government-issued IDs that together provide proof of identity and proof of citizenship, status as a US national or permanent resident status. Please bring a US Passport if you have one. Using your US passport to establish your identity is likely to expedite the TSA's security threat assessment process since it is well suited to assist in adjudicating cases.

Note: TSA requires that your full legal name appear on your Clear online application. The legal name on your online application must match the name that appears on both government-issued IDs you bring with you to complete in-person enrollment. If your legal name does not match both of your ID documents (e.g., one ID uses a maiden name), you must either update your ID documents before visiting the Clear enrollment center or bring a third document that links your two forms of ID. (For example, if you have a passport with maiden name Mary Jones and a driver’s license with married name Mary Smith, you must also show a government-issued marriage certificate showing both maiden and married names.) To complete enrollment with a third, linking document, your online account must contain both your current name and your previous legal name(s) (aliases). If you have a US passport (expired or unexpired; a cancelled passport cannot be accepted.), bring your passport plus one or more of the following to in-person enrollment:

  • Driver's License or identification card issued by a state or outlying
    possession of the US*
  • US Birth Certificate (original or certified copy only)
  • Valid US-issued Permanent Foreign Resident Card
  • Valid US-issued Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph
  • Certificate of Naturalization (form N-550 or N-570)
  • Certificate of Citizenship (form N-560 or N-561)
  • Certificate of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State (form FS-545 or form DS-1350)
  • Foreign Passport (unexpired only)
  • US Military ID Card or Certificate of Release or Discharge from
    Active Duty (DD form 214)

If you do not have a US Passport: but you do have an unexpired driver's license, learner's permit, unexpired military ID, or state-issued ID card, bring one of those, PLUS at least one of the following*:

  • US Birth Certificate (original or certified copy only )
  • Valid US-issued Permanent Foreign Resident Card
  • Valid US-issued Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph
  • Certificate of Naturalization (form N-550 or N-570)
  • Certificate of Citizenship (form N-560 or N-561)
  • Certificate of Birth Abroad issued by the Department of State (form FS-545 or form DS-1350)
  • US Passport (expired or unexpired)

* Your unexpired driver's license, learner’s permit, military ID, or state-issued ID card must contain a photograph and information such as name, date of birth, gender, height, eye color, address, and security features capable of being verified through authentication technology, and must not have been declared invalid for identification purposes by the federal government. If your driver's license is expired and has a renewal sticker, it may be rejected by our enrollment equipment.

If you have an unexpired foreign passport**, bring your passport, PLUS at least one of the following:

  • Valid US Permanent Foreign Resident Card
  • Alien Registration Receipt Card with photograph
  • Certificate of Citizenship (form N-560 or N-561)
  • Certificate of Naturalization (form N-550 or N-570)

**If your foreign passport has an extension sticker, it may only be used in combination with a US passport (expired or unexpired).

 

You must bring one document in your current name from Category A and one document from Category B from the list of acceptable government-issued ID document plus one of the following to validate the name change:

  • Original US Government-issued Marriage Certificate
  • Original US Government-issued Divorce Decree
  • Original US Government-issued Legal Name Change Order

You must enter your full legal name on your Clear online application and that name must match the name that appears on both government-issued ID documents you bring with you to complete in-person enrollment. After you complete in-person enrollment, your data will be securely submitted to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) for a security threat assessment. Once approved by TSA, you should receive your Clear card in approximately 10 business days.

Can I schedule a time to enroll at a Clear enrollment center?

Appointments are not necessary but you can schedule an appointment to complete enrollment at any of our enrollment centers by calling Clear Customer Support at 866-848-2415.

Can I complete the entire enrollment process at the airport?

Yes, but we recommend that you complete the online portion of your application before you come to the airport. You are more likely to have access to some key information, such as past addresses, which may be needed to complete the online portion of enrollment.

How long until I receive my Clear card?

After you go to a Clear enrollment location, and complete enrollment, you should receive your Clear card within two to four weeks.

Can my children join Clear?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) policy is that children under the age of 12 may not enroll in a registered traveler program, but may access the Clear lanes when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who is a registered traveler participant in good standing. Children using the Clear lane who are under 12 will be processed through the security checkpoint as "non-members."

Minors above the age of 12 are eligible to join the program through the same process as adults with the additional requirement that a parent or legal guardian must be an approved Clear member and must consent in writing to permit the child to join the program. If a parent or legal guardian's membership is cancelled or revoked the minor's membership associated with that account will simultaneously be cancelled.

What happens if my application is not accepted or if I am denied membership?

You will still be able to use the regular security lines at any airport, but will not have access to the Clear lane and your credit card will not be charged. Any data you provided will be purged.

Though the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is unable to disclose the reasons why individual travelers do not qualify, ineligibility is often due to a combination of the following:

  • Inability to resolve disqualifying information revealed in the course of the security threat assessment. Potential disqualifiers can include outstanding wants and warrants as well as information obtained from federal law enforcement and intelligence databases.
  • Inaccurate or insufficient application information.
  • Inability to provide sufficient biometric data. TSA does not release any information about the substance of its decision-making process to the Clear Program.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) does not have an appeals process at this time.

What lists do you look at to decide if someone can be a member?

The Transportation Security Administration conducts a "Security Threat Assessment" to assess whether applicants can become Clear members. Potential disqualifiers for participation in Clear can include outstanding wants and warrants as well as information obtained from federal law enforcement and intelligence databases.

Do I have to give permission for Iris Image Research?

Granting the TSA permission to use your iris images for research is strictly voluntary and will not impact your application in any way. Iris images may be shared with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for purposes of research to develop government standards for the use of iris images. Iris images will be shared with NIST only after TSA enters into a Memorandum of Understanding to minimize privacy impacts and secure the data. Participation is strictly voluntary.

Please note, you will still be asked to submit iris images during enrollment at the Clear enrollment station; however, if you choose not to grant permission for research, your images will not be shared with the NIST.

Why do I have to submit "Excess Data" that is not required by the TSA?

Clear collects certain information, or "excess data", as TSA calls it, for the creation and maintenance of a Clear account. This data is separate from data that the TSA requires to perform a security threat assessment. TSA requires us to make the following statements:

  • Collection of the excess data is neither required nor endorsed by TSA.
  • The excess data is being collected for Clear's use only and not for TSA use.
  • The provision of the excess data to Clear is not required for participation in RT, and will have no impact on the processing time for final eligibility determination by TSA.
  • The applicant may, after electing to participate in non-RT benefits, withdraw their permission at a later time by canceling their Clear account.
